Calf pain after a total knee replacement or other knee surgery if very common. Part of the problem is the swelling, part is weakness in the muscle and part is the dramatic change in activity level. The first thing to do is determine if it is actually the calf muscle or one of the other muscles of the lower leg. Next, it is important to determine if the pain is attributed to activity or could be a possible blood clot. Common symptoms of a blood clot include: Swelling, usually in one leg, Leg pain or tenderness often described as a cramp or Charley horse, Increasing Reddish or bluish skin discoloration in the lower leg below the knee, Increasing Leg warmth to the touch. If you have any indication that the pain you may be experiencing is a blood clot immediately contact your surgical team or call 911. In this video I explain these three causes of calf pain as well as some solutions we usually recommend in the clinic. After watching this video I will share recommended exercises you can ask your therapist about.
